In Avlis, a few meters away from the Shipyard area, one can visit the archaeological site of Iphigenia sacrifice altar.
Sailing a few miles away from Avlis, Chalkis (which was named after chalkos - bronze) is attractively situated on the Euripos at its narrowest. Chalkis is the capital (about 50,000 inhabitants) of the district of Euboea and one of the major harbors of central Greece.

As a modern industrialized city Chalkis combines a full range of telecommunication, hotel accommodation and a scenic coastal area, which provide the ideal port for management and crew.

The city is well situated for tourists, having nice beaches and excellent quality of fish restaurants. Some of Chalkis places of interest are mentioned here below:

  1. The Castle of Karababa. On the Viotia coast of the town, it occupies the top of the hill «Kanithos». The church of the Prophet Elijah has been preserved in the interior of the castle and from this hill the visitor has the opportunity to admire the wonderful view of the town.
  2. The mosque of Emir Zade, Characteristic monument of the period. To the north - east there is a marble fountain with a carved inscription.
  3. The Town Hall, housed in the mansion of «Kotsika», it dominates the sea front of the town, with its fine architecture and wonderful balanced dimensions.
  4. The Red House belonging to the family «Malliou» decorates the northern sea front. It belongs to the borough of Chalkida and was built in 1884 by the French architect Flengis.
  5. The church of Saint Paraskevi, a wooden roofed basilika of the 5th to 8th century. The church is built on the ruins of the ancient temple Artemi, Apollo and Leto. During Byzantium it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, «Perivleptos», but during the Turkish occupation it was turned into a store house and carriage house. After the liberation of Chalkida, the church was dedicated to Saint Paraskevi, the patroness of the town.
  6. The Court of Justice, on Veniselos Ave, whose architect was Matthew Kamaras (1909) and who designed other buildings in Chalkida during the same period.
  7. The Historical Archives Building which is housed in the mansion of Kriezotis.
  8. The church of Saint Nicholas. Byzantine style with fine murals.
  9. The Roman aquaduct in the district of «Kamares» (bridges) north - east of the town. There still stands part of the aquaduct which supplied the town with water from Kampia.
  10. The fountain «Arethousa» to the east of the church of Saint Stephen. In the same area there are stone steps and many industrial buildings.
  11. Roman arena (wrestling ring) with mosaic floors situated near the factory «Daring».
  12. Mosair floors, on the hill «Giftika» (old workers house), which are part of the town of ancient Chalkida.
