The shipyard is situated in Avlis, in Euripos waters
where the Greek fleet was preparing to sail against Troy.
The ancient drama that Euripides immortalized in an excellent
tragedy, "Iphigenia in Avlida", took
place here. Agamemnon kills at his ignorance Artemis
holy doe and the goddess
furious ceases the winds, not letting in this way Achaian
fleet to set sails to Troy. The solution that diviner
Kalhas suggested is rough for Agamemnon: to atone the
goddess
he has to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia on the goddess
altar. The responsibility of the General of the Army
towards the armed forces leads him to the tragic decision
and with
deceit Iphigenia and her mother Klitaimnistra are summoned
to Avlida.
The marriage to Achilles is
the trick, but finally Iphigenia is led to the altar
and overcoming her
fear of death she
is offering herself to be sacrificed for the fulfillment
of army's targets.
For that Iphigenia, who made
her ideal the success of the expedition and was led to
sacrifice at her
will, Euripides
corresponded her moral glory with the national glory
of Greece, saying through Achilles, that "I envy
Greece that
has children like you and I envy you for Greece is
your country".
However, at the last moment, before the sacrifice
with Artemis interference, Iphigenia disappears
and is transported
to Tauros country, where she becomes a priestess
at the goddess temple. Artemis put a doe at her
place on the altar
for the sacrifice and in this way the Greek fleet
managed
to sail for Troy.
Avlis and Euripos became the starting pointfor
this first panhellenic attempt that was achieved
with
the participation
of Evia residents, Avantes. However, a lot of
the above that have to do with Greeks gathering in
Avlis are
beyond history limits and verge on mythology.
This
does not in
any case limit their significance in the adaption
of the common national conscience of Panhellines
during
chalkos
(copper) period. |
